"Of all the forms
of inequality,
injustice in health care
is the most shocking and inhumane."

The San Antonio Healthcare-Now Coalition is an
affiliate of
the national Healthcare-Now organization.
The San Antonio affiliate was formed in 2006 by a small group of progressive community organizers, nurses, social workers, physicians, and union organizers in response to the growing healthcare crisis facing the nation.
In working to achieve universal access to affordable healthcare, our members are active on many fronts. Some of the areas of highest concentration are:
● Conduct lobbying efforts with local, state and federal elected of officials;
● Seek endorsement from labor, religious, professional and community groups;
● Disseminate information to public and private organizations;
● Provide resources and support to affiliate community groups;
● Collaborate with local, state and national health efforts; and
● Organize rallies in support of access to affordable healthcare.
The organization receives no funding.
All members serve in a volunteer capacity.
"We have been working on two fronts: (1) We
continue to schedule activities to educate the public, to meet with
city, state and U.S. officials, hold rallies and demonstrations, and
talk to any organization that will listen; and (2) We are taking part
in healthcare forums all over the city that are connected to faith
communities. During the 2008 elections, we had lots of folks on
our steering committee actively involved in the election process who
spent long dedicated hours supporting candidates who could potentially
endorse single-payer, getting out the vote.
SAHNC continues to grow in strength,
membership, diversity of talent, and recognition. Little by
little we have been able to help bring attention to the single-payer
issues as well as join other organizations who want to talk about the
alarming condition that exists in our American healthcare system.
All the above on a yearly treasury balance that
has rarely gone over $100.
Looking back at where SAHNC was two years ago,
we see things happening that were once only dim glimmers of hope, and
pipe dreams. While there is still much to do and many minds to
change, especially here in Texas with the political climate that exists
here, we look forward to the coming months as we begin to plan our
calendar of activities. Here's to a new year of hope and health!"
